Mike Dangeli, a Native craftsman from British Columbia, performs a song that his people, the Nisga’a, use to honor those returning from warfare. The custom has been practiced not only for tribal battles, but also for those who have joined more recent wars overseas, fighting on behalf of the U.S. government–which has not generally done as much to defend Native interests.
