Michael Johnson
Michael Johnson is known for his iconic images of the Black community of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. Born in Harlem, NY, he developed an appreciation for Renaissance painters, the Flemish masters, and Art Nouveau at an early age. As a young man, he prevailed upon his father to lend him $350 to buy his first camera. He then moved to Martha’s Vineyard, where he taught himself photography. Johnson’s wide range of work has taken him all over the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, Cuba, and Thailand. He runs a gallery in Vineyard Haven, MA.
