Francis Davis

is the author of seven books on music and other aspects of popular culture, including “Afterglow: A Last Conversation with Pauline Kael” and “Jazz and Its Discontents: A Francis Davis Reader.” Francis has written for numerous publications, including The New Yorker, the New York Times, and The Nation, and is a former Contributing Editor of The Atlantic and columnist for The Village Voice.  His honors and awards include a 1993 Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pew Fellowship in the Arts (for Literary Nonfiction), a National Arts Journalism Program Senior Fellowship, five ASCAP-Deems Taylor Awards for Excellence in Music Journalism, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Journalists Association, and a 2008 Grammy for his album notes to the 50th Anniversary edition of Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue.
